she was the warm tropical air
gathering her forces as if preparing for a storm
then she blew over me like a category 5 hurricane
from which nothing of me escaped harm

she was the sun setting on a moonless night
that left my world almost totally dark
and I was struggling in the cold to start a fire
but unable to find a match to even light a spark

she left me vacuum packed and sealed in plastic
forgotten and stored up on guest room closet shelf
not really a good feeling
in and of itself

don’t criticize the government
and be careful what you publish or say
for the IRS has agents in Cincinnati carefully watching
and you may have an audit coming your way

perhaps our famous freedom of the press
is no longer required and has been highly overrated
since the DOJ is now targeting reporters
and the people don’t care what goes unstated

as I sit and try to scratch an itch
that I just can’t seem to reach
the sounds on the TV remind me of when Nixon
resigned to keep from being impeached

I wonder why those with power become arrogant
and ultimately forget where they came from
or have they always felt they were the elite
and that the rest of us are all just plain dumb?

they make mistakes which are then covered up
with blatant lies instead of being frankly admitted
and then the facts and the truth must be tortured
and twisted while key points are simply omitted

memories become suspect and very selective
and finally the fifth amendment is heard recited
by people who seem to forget the first and the second
but that never, in the end, seem to get justly indicted

I almost got lucky
in a dream last night
but somehow things just
didn’t work out quite right

I guess I’m the same person
in the end, even in my dreams
as I am in reality
or so it seems

which strikes me as ironic
and brings a smile to my face
because wherever I go
I’m never really out of place

for wherever I go
that’s where I am
and even in my most private dreams
luckily, I’m the same silly old man

I’m not hoping or searching
for a so called trophy wife
since I’m already with
my only partner for life

even the concept seems silly
a mindlessly pointless show
when a meaningful soul mate
is the one most worthy to know

but not everyone finds in life
what they thought they were looking for
and life seems to be never-ending struggle
that leaves us wanting something more

in the end, not everyone can win a trophy
or is something worthy of special notation
most of us are just lucky enough
to get a certificate of participation

someone must have left the front door
unlocked or something
thinking we were all safe and sound

or we were all too busy to notice
doing something so important

I suppose it sometimes sadly seems
so much easier to believe
that the dark side is stronger
as we stand in sorrow and grieve

but there is no method to the madness
of anger and hate and destruction
and no end to the easy path
for those that succomb to that seduction

for I know deep in my heart that love
and forgiveness is really the stronger force
and one day humanity will prove this
just as a matter of course

I wonder what price
would I dare to pay
to sit at the grand table
one fine day

to feast with the high king
under those golden shields
my soul lifted up
from the dying fields

with the brave few
having died in combat
and then chosen by Odin
just imagine that

but if Valhalla required the spilling
of innocent blood
I’d rather watch myself
slowly rot and decay in the mud

those that try to murder their way
through the mighty golden doors
are unworthy to enter the Hall
or to even sweep the floors

those misguided soulless bastards
that are all filled with hate
will never even see the holy doors
nor walk through the ancient gate

now faded
and scentless

dried, aged and withered
by the passing of so many long years
of drought and loss

brittle and crumbling
like a recently unearthed
ancient Egyptian mummy

yet her thorns
still have their prickle
and bite

and her touch
still makes me bleed
red like the rose she once was
