Normal Girl

Girl at an Open Half-Door - Rembrandt Harmensz...

how can I love you
when I don’t even know you?
how can I want you
when you don’t even care?

why is it that your smile
makes my whole world turn bright?
why is it that when you’re gone
so is my light?

when you’re not that beautiful
not that wonderful, not that mystical
you’re just a normal girl, just a normal girl
you’re just a normal girl
but I love you, but I love you

why do I feel
the way that I do?
is it something that you say
or something that you do?

why does my heart ache
when you pass by me?
what is the answer
to this mystery?

when you’re not that beautiful
not that wonderful, not that mystical
you’re just a normal girl, just a normal girl
you’re just a normal girl
but I love you, but I love you

I liked the idea of writing a love song where the girl isn’t exactly beautiful in the classical sense. Because, I often find beauty in the smallest flicker of a smile or the tenderness of touch or the soft melody of a sympathetic voice. The simplest little things that can be so attractive but that aren’t always so obvious. That’s part of the mystery of love, I think.

Interestingly, I totally left out singing of the chorus on the later re-recording. I don’t know if I felt it was too harsh or if I was unhappy with the words or if I just wanted to focus on the guitar chords.
