how can you respect her
when you didn’t really respect her before?
deserves some respect
don’t you think?
maybe even you?
what possible harm
could a little self-respect do?

I remember the first three lines came to me in college when an acquaintance told me how much “respect” he had for a girl that had slept with, but that he no intention to date seriously. I remember thinking that respect must have multiple meanings. Although, perhaps this little college fragment of a poem comes off a little too full of itself. It needs a little humility and humor, I think. I’ll have to ponder about how to do that without disrespecting the simple message.
