the hollow tree

the cold wind blows right through me
making a sound like a random off tune bassoon
for I am a hollow tree

a shallow and empty man
wishing I was so deep and full of soul
left wondering why I am the way that I am

my leaves appear to grow green
but appearances can be deceiving
and I am not what i seem

my hopes are like wind blowing over dry stalks of corn
in a nearby field sounding restless and forlorn
wishing that I could take some other form

but there is no other reality
we can only be what we can be
and I am a hollow tree
