lady liberty has looked better

with American Independence day just around the corner
poor lady liberty is looking a little worse for wear
as the last super power apologizes and abdicates the throne
and the citizenry just occupy empty space and stare

and the lady with silent lips, she no longer stands so proud
her lamp of lightning lies broken in pieces on the ground
her robe is ripped and torn from her once bountiful body
exposing her emaciated flesh to all the jobless that mill around

the medicaid masses now huddle together yearning for an answer
with the meaning of freedom forgotten in our unforgiven past
as the constitution deteriorates into just another piece of paper
and the gulf between the rich and poor becomes ever more vast

feeling entitled to ask what our country has done for us, lately
as our predator drones circle the globe representing the nation of the free
and look at the infrastructure the elite built with 15 trillion borrowed from our children
so is the USA destined to become just another failed footnote in world history?

Normally, I try to stay away from politics in my poetry, but today I couldn’t help myself. If I’m lucky I’ll probably alienate everybody on both sides of the spectrum, equally. That’s fairness, I suppose.

Na no alienation today, the disillusion coming from overseas these days are like a flood. But then one must consider that social networking maybe the gate that has opened all these voices. A good thought out write

Thanks. I was feeling a little like Mister Spock after taking a gamble and sending his distress signal in the episode “The Galileo Seven”. He said, “No one out there to see it.” and “Totally illogical. There was no chance.” Good to know that I was wrong, my friend.
