a cold dark nothing

it sounds like it’s raining hard outside
or maybe that’s all in my head
my room somehow seems smaller today
so, I think I’ll go back to bed

then I dream that I’m back at our family cabin
surrounded by the green trees of Tennessee
my father is trying to stop the flooding
the source of which is just a mystery

next, I hear someone crying in the distance
but I don’t have my glasses, so I can’t see
and I hear the sound of tears falling
that plop and echo eerily

I have the weird feeling that I’m missing something
something that should be important to me
but my searching mind comes up with nothing
only a cold dark nothing that is silent and empty

the sounds from the sewer

Sewer

Sewer (Photo credit: Clover_1)

so many voices
crying out in the vast wilderness
a cacophony of our common composition
full of sound and fury and way beyond bitterness

so many points of view
that I don’t comprehend or understand
all trapped in self and individuality
and separated forever by the big plan

so many hands
reaching out to touch and feel
searching but not finding some ray of hope
for something meaningful to hold that is real

so many countless lost tears
washed clean by a cold rainy day
and swept away into a public city sewer drain
where now all is dashed and sounds are led astray

her tender voice

Rain Drops

Rain Drops (Photo credit: freefotouk)

I thought I heard her tender voice
an echo from the distant past
that slowly diminished in my hollow head
until the empty silence returned at last

outside rain drops glistened on my window
and like tears they slowly fell
but I told myself there was nothing to cry about
and it was all just as well

what the rain doesn’t wash away

The Rainbow set as the symbol of the Covenant ...

The Rainbow set as the symbol of the Covenant with Noah after the Great Flood of the Bible. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

listen to the rhythm of the pouring rain
a pleasant little sound like my life so plain

drop by drop the rain keeps coming down
with our falling spirits bringing so many  frowns

at least Noah is safe and dry in his Ark
while Physicists are searching for the elusive quark

and we are so secure in our blissful ignorance
but is this vast universe really left to chance?

I suppose the questions will continue until the very end of time
with the meaning forever lost in this silly enigmatic rhyme

so just what is the lesson hidden within the rain
if things go wrong in our lives, who is to blame?

perhaps it’s time to wash away our wrongs and bow low
and start all over with a fresh rainbow
