avoiding open ground

I remember every anxious slow motion moment
When we were both cautiously maneuvering around
Uncertain of each others feelings and positions
Neither wanting to be the first caught in open ground

Did you mean more than what you actually said?
I searched but didn’t find hidden signals and signs
So maybe it all was just the fog of war in my head
And I was just reading too much in between the lines

Earlier draft versions of this one started out with testing and dancing and comparisons to playing poker with tells and bluffing and winning/losing hands. Of course, you know which hand I would have been dealt. But I was feeling feisty and ready for a fight tonight, so I rewrote this one along the lines of warfare. All is fair in love and war, right? So, I’m not the first to compare the two. Love the picture, I can almost hear the bullets whizzing by. Is that a bullet in flight I see in the picture? How the heck did it get there? Gotta run back to the safety of my trench, now, before some sexy sharp shooting sniper nails me out here. Exposed, as I am.
